AI Max vs Performance Max: what’s the difference in Google Ads? (2026 guide)

AI Max and Performance Max are not two versions of the same Google Ads campaign. AI Max is an optimisation layer you switch on inside a Search campaign. Performance Max is a separate, goal-based campaign type that can serve across Google inventory including Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps.

That distinction matters in September 2026 because Google is folding more Search automation into AI Max. Some older Search settings are being upgraded into the AI Max framework, while Performance Max remains its own campaign type. If you run Google Ads for a small UK business, the useful question is not “Which Max is better?” It is: what job do you need the campaign to do, and how much control do you need while it does it?

AI Max vs Performance Max: the short answer

Use AI Max when you want to keep the structure and intent of a Search campaign but let Google expand matching, adapt ad text and choose more relevant landing pages. Use Performance Max when you want one goal-based campaign to find conversions across multiple Google channels rather than Search alone.

Google describes AI Max as an optimisation layer for Search campaigns, not a new campaign type. Its main features include search term matching and asset optimisation, with options such as text customisation and Final URL expansion. Performance Max, by contrast, is a distinct campaign type built to work across Google’s inventory from one campaign.

The core difference

AI Max for Search Performance Max
What it is An optimisation layer inside a Search campaign A separate goal-based campaign type
Where it serves Search Across Google inventory, including Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps
Campaign structure Keeps Search campaign structure, keywords and ad groups Uses assets, audience signals, feeds and conversion goals rather than keyword-led Search structure
Typical reason to use it Expand and automate Search while retaining Search-style controls Let Google optimise towards a conversion goal across channels
Creative requirement Mostly Search ad copy and landing pages Stronger need for a broader asset set, especially images and video

What AI Max actually changes in a Search campaign

AI Max sits on top of an existing Search campaign. Google says its two main areas are search term matching and asset optimisation.

Search term matching can expand beyond the queries your existing keyword set would have reached, using broad-match and keywordless technology. Google uses signals from your keywords, ads and landing pages to decide which searches may be relevant.

Asset optimisation can adapt text and, when Final URL expansion is enabled, send a user to a landing page Google considers more relevant than the one you originally specified. That can be useful on a site with several genuinely distinct service or product pages. It can be risky on a messy site where similar pages overlap, old pages are still live or important offers are not clearly separated.

This is why the campaign cannot be judged in isolation from the website. Before adding more automation, run the five checks before you spend £1 on ads: especially conversion tracking, landing-page clarity and whether the numbers work at your margins.

What Performance Max actually changes

Performance Max starts from a different place. Instead of asking Google to optimise a Search campaign, you give it a business goal, conversion data and creative assets, then allow it to look for opportunities across multiple Google surfaces.

That broader reach is the main attraction. It is also the main reason the campaign needs disciplined inputs. If the conversion goal is poor, the feed is weak, the creative is thin or the account is optimising towards low-value actions, broader automation can simply scale the wrong signal.

For ecommerce, Performance Max can work closely with Merchant Center product data. For lead generation, the quality of conversion tracking matters even more because a cheap form fill is not automatically a useful lead. Before choosing the campaign type, it is worth being clear on how much the business can sensibly spend on ads and what a worthwhile conversion is actually worth.

Can AI Max and Performance Max run at the same time?

Yes. They are not mutually exclusive.

Google says that if a search query is eligible to match both an AI Max Search campaign and a Performance Max campaign, the candidate with the highest Ad Rank can serve. In other words, running both does not mean you have created two neatly separated lanes that will never meet.

That makes account structure important. If both campaigns chase the same goal, use the same landing pages and have little strategic separation, the reporting can become harder to interpret. The solution is not automatically to switch one off. It is to decide what each campaign is responsible for and whether the account has enough budget and conversion volume to learn anything useful.

What changed in 2026?

This comparison has become more important because Google is moving older Search automation into AI Max.

Google announced that campaign-level broad match settings and Automatically Created Assets would begin upgrading into AI Max from September 2026. Its original plan to begin moving Dynamic Search Ads at the same time was later extended: Google now says the DSA sunset and automatic upgrade will begin in February 2027.

That means some advertisers will encounter AI Max even if they did not set out to build a new campaign around it. New Search campaigns also present AI Max as part of the standard setup. It is therefore worth understanding the controls rather than treating it as another label to accept without review.

When AI Max is the more sensible starting point

AI Max is usually the more natural test when Search already works for the business and you want to expand it without rebuilding the account around a multi-channel campaign.

That can include businesses where customers actively search for a service, where the wording of the query gives useful intent, or where you want to keep a closer connection between search behaviour, ad copy and landing pages. If you are still deciding whether search demand or social discovery should come first, start with our guide to Meta or Google ads first.

AI Max also suits a test-led approach. Rather than assuming the automation will help, define the baseline before switching it on: qualified conversions, cost per qualified conversion, conversion value where relevant, search-term quality and landing-page performance. Then compare the change against the same business outcome.

When Performance Max is the more sensible starting point

Performance Max makes more sense when the business genuinely wants Google to find conversions across channels and has the inputs to support that job.

For an ecommerce store, that usually means accurate product data, reliable purchase tracking and enough creative to represent the products properly. For a service business, it means conversion actions that distinguish meaningful enquiries from low-value activity.

It is less useful to think of Performance Max as “Search, but smarter”. It is a broader campaign architecture. If what you actually need is one tightly defined search campaign around a specific service or offer, the simpler structure may be more informative.

A practical decision framework for a small business

Use these questions before choosing:

  1. Where does demand already exist? If buyers are actively searching for the thing now, Search may deserve the first test.
  2. How broad is the job? If you only need to capture high-intent searches, AI Max can extend Search. If you want Google to hunt across channels, Performance Max is built for that.
  3. How good is your conversion data? Automation needs a signal. Poor tracking makes both campaign types harder to judge.
  4. How strong are your landing pages? AI Max can expand URLs; Performance Max can send traffic from several surfaces. Neither fixes a page that does not explain the offer clearly.
  5. How much budget can you concentrate? Splitting a modest budget across too many campaign types can leave you with several noisy tests instead of one useful answer.

If you need help with that last point, our guide to Google Ads management costs in the UK separates management cost from media spend and explains what you are actually paying for.

Do not choose on the word “AI”

Both products use Google AI. That does not make them interchangeable, and it does not remove the need for account judgement.

A sensible setup still needs clear conversion goals, clean tracking, useful exclusions, strong landing pages and a budget large enough to produce a readable test. The more automation you allow, the more important the inputs become.

If the account is simple and the objective is narrow, simplicity can be an advantage. If the account has strong data, a broader product range and enough creative, wider automation may have more room to work.

FAQs

Is AI Max replacing Performance Max?

No. AI Max is an optimisation layer for Search campaigns. Performance Max remains a separate goal-based campaign type that can serve across multiple Google channels.

Is AI Max a new campaign type?

No. Google explicitly describes AI Max as a set of features you activate within an existing Search campaign.

Can AI Max and Performance Max compete with each other?

They can both be eligible for the same search. Google says that when this happens, the candidate with the highest Ad Rank can serve.

Is Dynamic Search Ads disappearing?

Google has announced a transition from legacy Dynamic Search Ads towards AI Max, but the timetable changed. The DSA sunset and automatic upgrade are now due to begin in February 2027, while some other Search automation settings began moving into AI Max from September 2026.

The useful bit

AI Max is Search with a stronger automation layer. Performance Max is a broader campaign type. Start with the business problem, not the product name.

If you want one campaign set up around a defined offer, the Single campaign set-up keeps the scope deliberately tight. If you need a fuller paid-ads launch with setup and optimisation, see the Ads launch sprint.
