Klaviyo vs Shopify Email: which should a UK ecommerce business choose?
Share
If you run a Shopify store and are choosing between Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) and Klaviyo, the short answer is simple: start with Shopify Messaging when your needs are straightforward; move to Klaviyo when better segmentation, automation and lifecycle marketing are valuable enough to justify the extra cost and complexity.
The expensive mistake is not choosing the “wrong” logo. It is paying for sophisticated software before you have the list, data, offers and email programme to use it — or staying with a basic setup after email has become a meaningful revenue channel.
This guide compares the two as a UK ecommerce owner would actually need to choose them: capability, effort, cost structure and the point at which an upgrade starts making commercial sense.
Klaviyo vs Shopify Email: the quick decision
| If this sounds like your store | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are early-stage, have a modest list and need campaigns plus essential automations | Shopify Messaging | Lower complexity and native Shopify workflow |
| You mainly need welcome, abandoned-cart and post-purchase emails working properly | Shopify Messaging | Do the fundamentals before buying more tooling |
| You have meaningful repeat purchase behaviour and want deeper customer segmentation | Klaviyo | More advanced behavioural data and automation become useful |
| Email is already a material sales channel and you want sophisticated lifecycle programmes | Klaviyo | The additional control can justify the higher software and management cost |
| You cannot explain what you would build in Klaviyo that you cannot do today | Shopify Messaging | You probably do not need to migrate yet |
That last row matters. Software does not create an email strategy. A neglected Klaviyo account is usually less valuable than a simple Shopify setup with the right flows, offers and measurement.
What is Shopify Email?
Shopify Email is now called Shopify Messaging. It is Shopify's native marketing tool for email, with SMS and WhatsApp capabilities also being added within the same product. It sits inside the Shopify admin and uses store and customer data already held in Shopify. For a merchant who wants to send campaigns and automate common ecommerce messages without adding another major platform, that integration is the main attraction.
Shopify's own documentation says Shopify Messaging can create email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns and marketing automations from Shopify. See Shopify's current messaging documentation.
The practical advantage is operational: fewer systems, less syncing and a smaller learning curve.
What is Klaviyo?
Klaviyo is a dedicated B2C CRM and marketing automation platform with a strong ecommerce focus. It integrates with Shopify but is a separate system, designed for more sophisticated customer profiles, segmentation, automation and multi-channel lifecycle marketing.
That broader capability is useful when you can actually exploit it. It also means another platform to configure, monitor and pay for.
The real comparison: capability versus complexity
Owners often compare email platforms by feature count. That is the wrong starting point.
The useful question is: which platform can your business turn into profitable customer communication now?
A feature you never configure has no commercial value. An automation that sends the wrong message to the wrong segment can be worse than having no advanced automation at all.
Shopify's advantage: simplicity
For a smaller Shopify business, native integration is valuable. Customer groups, products and store activity already live in the same ecosystem. You can spend more time on the offer and message and less time maintaining the marketing stack.
If you have not yet built the basics, our guide to the three emails every online shop needs is the better starting point than debating advanced software.
Klaviyo's advantage: depth
Klaviyo becomes more compelling when the business needs more granular behavioural segmentation and branching customer journeys.
Examples include treating high-value repeat customers differently from first-time buyers, changing follow-up according to browsing or purchase behaviour, building category-specific replenishment journeys, or coordinating more sophisticated lifecycle programmes.
That depth is not automatically better. It becomes better when your store has enough customer activity, data and operational capacity to use it.
How should a UK Shopify store compare the cost?
Do not compare only the monthly subscription displayed on a pricing page.
Compare total operating cost:
- software subscription;
- implementation and migration time;
- template and flow creation;
- ongoing campaign production;
- segmentation and testing;
- reporting and maintenance;
- the cost of mistakes or neglected automations.
Shopify's pricing is primarily tied to message volume, while Klaviyo pricing scales according to the account's active profiles and selected channels. Both can therefore become more expensive as the programme grows, but through different mechanisms.
Because software pricing changes, check the vendors' live pricing before making a purchasing decision: Shopify Messaging and Klaviyo pricing.
The commercial question is not “which one is cheaper?” It is “what additional profit or saved operating time will I reasonably get for the additional cost?”
When Shopify Messaging is probably enough
Shopify Messaging is a sensible choice when most of these are true:
- your email list is still relatively small;
- you send occasional or regular promotional campaigns;
- you need a handful of important automations rather than dozens of branches;
- your customer journeys are fairly simple;
- you do not have somebody actively managing lifecycle marketing;
- you would rather invest the difference in traffic, creative, merchandising or conversion work.
For many small stores, the bigger opportunity is not changing software. It is getting the fundamentals live. Welcome, cart recovery and post-purchase communication can do more for the business than another unused dashboard.
If that is where you are, Mind the Shop's three core Shopify Email flows is designed around exactly that problem.
When Klaviyo starts to make more sense
Consider Klaviyo when several of these are true:
- email already contributes meaningful revenue;
- you have enough customers for segmentation to change decisions;
- repeat purchase and customer lifetime value matter strongly to your model;
- you want sophisticated event-based flows and branching logic;
- you regularly test campaigns, offers and segments;
- somebody has clear responsibility for running the programme;
- your existing email setup is genuinely limiting an identified strategy.
Notice the last point. “Klaviyo has more features” is not a migration case. “We need to treat first-time purchasers, VIP customers and lapsed buyers differently, and our current workflow makes that impractical” is.
Do not migrate to fix a conversion problem
Email platforms are often blamed for problems elsewhere in the funnel.
If people click your emails but do not buy, inspect the landing page, product page, offer and checkout before replacing the email system. A more advanced automation platform cannot rescue a confusing buying experience.
Start with the product-page conversion checks and our Shopify checkout optimisation guide if the problem appears after the click.
A simple decision framework
1. Write down the flows you actually need
Not the flows a software vendor says are possible. List the customer journeys that would matter to your business during the next six months.
2. Mark what your current setup cannot do
Separate real constraints from features you simply have not configured yet.
3. Put a value on the gap
If a more sophisticated platform costs more in software and management, what commercial outcome is expected to pay for that difference?
4. Check who will run it
A powerful system needs ownership. If nobody has time to build segments, analyse results and improve flows, complexity can become overhead.
5. Choose the simplest platform that supports the next stage
You do not need to buy your three-year marketing stack today. Choose for the business you can realistically operate over the next six to twelve months.
Who should not choose Klaviyo yet?
You probably should not upgrade purely because other ecommerce brands use it, because an agency recommended it without analysing your needs, or because you want more impressive reporting.
If your store has weak product pages, poor traffic quality, no basic flows, an unclear offer or very little repeat-purchase potential, there may be better places to spend the next pound.
Who may be outgrowing Shopify Email?
If your team repeatedly works around segmentation limits, manually recreates audiences, wants more sophisticated event-driven journeys or can point to specific lifecycle opportunities it cannot implement efficiently, the extra capability of a specialist platform becomes easier to justify.
At that stage, compare the migration cost as well as the licence. Historical data, templates, deliverability configuration, forms, flows and reporting all need consideration.
What I would choose
For a small Shopify store building its email programme from scratch, I would usually begin with Shopify Messaging and invest first in good fundamentals.
For an established ecommerce business with meaningful customer volume, repeat purchasing and somebody responsible for lifecycle marketing, I would put Klaviyo on the shortlist and assess it against specific use cases rather than feature count.
There is no prize for owning the more sophisticated tool. The winner is the setup your business can operate well enough to generate incremental profit.
Before you pay for another platform
If the real issue is that your Shopify store has several things going wrong at once — email, product pages, conversion, tracking or paid traffic — buying software before diagnosing the bottleneck can add another layer of mess.
Send the problem, screenshots or numbers through Send Me Your Mess. The point is to work out what deserves fixing first, including whether changing email platform is actually the next move.
